Deltic Farewell 25th Anniversary
The latest event for the Deltic Preservation Society and a great day it proved to be with a large turnout of visitors coming for today's celebration. Both 55019 and D9009 worked on trains all day without any problems and with some specially made headboards like the ones used on the final day 2nd January 1982. On the last working of the day the opportunity was taken to end it in style with 55019 arriving at Barrow Hill station with its horns blaring re-enacting 55022 on its arrival into Kings Cross 25 years ago. After this D9009 and 55019 were parked in front of the coaling station and posed for photos with the headboard on D9009 switching ends for added effect. While all this had been happening 55008 has been open to the public after some technical faults had been sorted first thing that morning. Inside the depot the sales stand was extremely busy all day and it had some new merchandise of key rings, mugs, a celebration book and DVDs to comemorate the day 25 years ago. On display was D9015 which was being checked over with the original skinning drawings in advance of skinning and D9016 had been positioned over the pit. The museum area was open and a number of monitors had been set-up around the depot showing a variety of Deltic films. Nigel Paine gave his power unit talk in the display area to a crowd of interested people. After the event had closed and public had left site a major shunt in the depot was done so D9016 and D9015 are now side by side, while D9009 has taken Gordon Highlander's position on the pit and 55019 is in Alycidon's previous position. Many thanks must be said to the organiser of this event, DPS Sales Officer Ian Lewis who has put endless hours to make sure everything ran smoothly and his team of volunteers who all deserve a good rest after a long day. Pictures of this great event are available here.
Restoration
A day of sparks and excitement as the first two pieces of body skin were welded into place on Tulyar, one of the centre sections and side panels had been welded on by the end of the day, only another 30 to go. The reason for starting in the centre and working out is the centre piece has to be in the correct place first for other pieces of skin working out to fit correctly. Other jobs being done in the depot while this was happening, pipe work repairs for Tulyar with them being partially rubbed down and await repainting. Sales stock was being prepared ready for the next show the DPS sales stand will be appearing at. Images of the body skin being welded on are available here.
Restoration
Five down another twenty seven to go, this is the number of panels now attached to D9015 as the re-skinning process progresses at lightning speed. In number two cab of Tulyar work was being done on the door frame to the nose stripping it back down to bare metal. In the workshop Tulayr's stacked up radiators were swapped around so work could be done on one of the lower radiators. The door to the nose in the second end of Tulyar received another coat of paint. More pipe work has been cleaned up and is now starting to receive fresh coats of paint. More preparation of sales stock, sorting out the cupboards and general tidying up was done by members of the sales team. Pictures of the day’s activities are available here.
Restoration
Another day's work done and Tulyar is now starting to look like a proper Deltic again. By the end of the day, 7 panels were on D9015 and the centre two panels had been painted in primer green. Some pieces of the body skin have received minor scratches whilst being moved around the depot and being stacked up and they have started receiving touch ups to repair these scratches. In the workshop and more pipe work repairs were underway and pipes that were completed from last week have been wrapped up in rags and placed in stores ready to put back on Tulyar. Pictures of the day’s activities are available here.

Restoration
Busy day today as restoration work continues on Tulyar and maintenance work is carried out on Alycidon, with greasing done around the bogies and the ETH being refitted. On Tulyar more body skin has been fitted and now 11 panels have been put in place with skins that have been completely welded on having some grinding done to make a smoother body finish, while in No.2 cab end restoration work is being continued. In the workshop more pipe repairs were being done with the red and black pipes receiving fresh coats of paint. Some sorting of sales stock was also done. Pictures of the day’s activities are available here.
Restoration
A quieter than usual day in the depot as the directors of the DPS were on site having one of their meetings so this lowered numbers in the depot but by mid afternoon numbers were back to normal. The main focus as usual is on Tulyar and on the outside one quarter of the panels are now in primer green while at the other end of the loco more panels were fitted and await seam welding. Some panels that were seam welded on Friday have been ground to create a smoother surface. On the inside of Tulyar the quarter of the body work that has had the panels completely welded on have now had two additional coats of paint. On the other quarter of 15 where panels are still being fitted, they received a single layer of paint but areas still awaiting to be welded from the outside were missed. In the workshop the larger of the red pipes have now received there top coat of paint while some of the same pipe work in Tulyar was also touched up where scratches have appeared. Blue pipes that were painted a couple of weeks ago were wrapped up in rags and transferred into stores. Pictures of the day’s activities are available here.
Restoration
An interesting day in the depot with a hive of activity on the power unit located on a warflat, which will shortly be changed for the faulty power unit in Alycidon. First job was to remove the crank case covers then to pump oil round the power unit, which was a success as oil started coming out of many places. The pistons and conrods were then oiled up by hand. After this the fuel pumps were then changed on both sides of the power unit with the linkages being removed, cleaned and replaced. While all of this was going off brush boxes from the main generator were being removed and cleaned. On Tulyar more welding with the number 2 end last few panels being seam welded in place and the centre panel has been tack welded in position. In the workshop more pipe repairs were on going with Louise on the job today who made rubbing down and repainting 8 large and 16 mini black pipes look easy. Pictures of the day’s activities are available here.
Restoration
A good number of volunteers today and a number of jobs progressed. Last week the majority of the outer body skin fitted so far on Tulyar had been painted in primer green and with this saw the start of filling, which continued today to make a smoother body surface. The end piece of skin for number 1 end on Tulyar was starting to be fitted today. Inside 15 and all of the body skin has now been painted in a top coat of black paint. On the war flat more preparation work was being done on the power unit to get it ready for changing with Alycidon's. In the workshop more pipe work repairs were underway and some body skins yet to be fitted to Tulyar were having scratches repaired. Early afternoon saw a volunteers meeting to discuss the current progress with various projects e.g. Tulyars re-skin, power unit change, etc, during the meeting depot health and safety was discussed to bring volunteers up to speed on the latest guidelines. Pictures of the day’s activities are available here.

Restoration
Another busy day was had by all with progress on re-skinning D9015 and preparation of the power unit for D9009. On Tulyar some welding was done on the under part of the body skin to the frame and more filling has been done on parts of the skin that have already been welded. On the inside trial fitting of the inner body skin has been done so measurements can be made as to where to drill holes ready for pop riveting the body skin to the frame. In number 2 cab more restoration work has been done to make the cab look smarter. During the week, with D9016 leaving the depot, both Tulyar's replacement bogies were moved into the depot together with a VDA van in Gordon Highlander's former position. More preparations have been done on the replacement power unit making it ready for an exchange of Alycidon's defective unit. The crank case cover for the under part of the power unit was refitted, more brush boxes from the main generator were being removed and cleaned. Four spare feet for the power unit were stripped, cleaned, new rubber for the flexible mountings fitted and were rebuilt ready for the power unit change. In the workshop yet more pipe repairs were on going and one of the body side grills has received some attention. Pictures of the day’s activities are available here.
On the 2nd March D9016 left Barrow Hill at mid day on a low loader and has been moved to a new home at Peak Rail, where it should be restored to running order hopefully in time for the 12th May for the Peak Rail Diesel Weekend.
Restoration
More progress today with many volunteers at the depot. A Serco engineer has been on site having a look at D9009 bogies. Two weeks ago Alycidon's defective unit was changed and last week it was load banked. On Tulyar the exterior body skin is now looking good and the under part of the skins have all been welded to the frame. Today more filling has been done on the exterior of the skin and some grinding was being done to clean up the welds on the under part of the skin. On the inside of 15 more trial fitting of the inner body skin was taking place, which has now started on the third quarter. In the workshop more pipe work repairs were under way on the coolant pipes, which have now been rubbed down. Tulyars horns have been taken back to bare metal and the body side grills being worked on a few weeks ago have now received a coat of gloss paint. Some tidying was also done in the depot and around the stores area. Pictures of the day’s activities are available here.

Restoration
Another busy day with a large number of volunteers on site. Tulyar was having an end piece of body skin welded on and inside more trial fitting of the inner body skin was underway. On 55019 greasing of the wheel bearings was under taken with a number of the grease nipples having to be taken out, cleaned and replaced due to them being blocked. By the end of the day 7 out of the 12 had been completed. Alycidon was having greasing done on its wheel bearings and fault finding was underway inside the loco to find a vacuum leak. Using Barrow Hills 03 as the vacuum loco vacuum pressure was being applied and taken away from 9 but by the end of the day the fault still had not been found. In the workshop more pipe work and cleaning of components for Tulyar was in progress.
Restoration
A bank holiday and some volunteers made it onto site today to carry on with work. On Tulyar more test fitting of internal body skin was being done. On RHF greasing of the wheel bearings was continued and completed. On Alycidon the services of the 03 were called on again to continue searching for the vacuum leak, which was found and the faults rectified.
Restoration
A noisy day at the depot as both D9009 and 55019 were started up. D9009 has had the final touches done mechanically and externally preparing it to go to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. After all this was done Alycidon was taken outside and had brake tests then dragged 55019 outside. Then she took a trip around Barrow Hill having last minute checks to make sure everything is in fully working order, then was returned to the shed. 55019 first thing that morning had its axle box covers refitted and baring over engines. Once outside Royal Highland Fusilier was then started up to do some checks on the compressors, then was returned to the shed. D9015 has had more work on its re-skinning done. The DPS directors were also on site today having a meeting. Pictures of today’s activities are available here.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
The DPS's touring season has now started and the first railway this year for our two magic machines to visit was the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Originally advertised that D9009 was going 55019 was a last minute addition to the bill due to 20 227 from the MRC being unavailable due to a fault, so RHF took the 20's turn. Both Deltic's performed very well and large crowds piled onto the trains hauled by them. During the afternoon 55019 developed a fault with a fan prop shaft so could only be run on one engine and this fault is being looked into, to get it resolved soon. D9009 ran very well on both power units and had a small oil run down one side from the exhaust vent as is often seen when Deltic's are working on preserved lines. Two more running weekends have now been added for 9 and 19 during the NYMR ECML celebrations, which are on the 28-29 April and 4-7 May. The latest information on this event is available here. Pictures from North Yorkshire Moors Railway diesel gala are available here.
D9016 None starter
Saturday 28th April and D9016 was due to run at Peak Rail for crew training during the community festival but was a none starter due to flat batteries. The run had been advertised by members of Peak Rail on the Preserved Diesels forum at the start of last week. Saturday night and during Sunday the loco was put on charge and during Sunday afternoon D9016 finally started and worked the last return train service on Sunday. D9016 has been advertised to run its first official train service at Peak Rail during their Diesel Weekend on the 12 and 13 May, volunteers on site said the Deltic should be ready for then. A couple of images from Saturday are below, photos by James Whincup:

Restoration
A more productive weekend was had last weekend as more volunteers returned (including some people from the past) to depot to carry on with the restoration of Tulyar. The last panel of the body skin on the first side was being welded on, while grinding of the excess welds on the under skin was continuing. More of the window frames were starting to get holes drilled ready for trial fitting. In number one cab, the cab heaters were receiving a rewire. In the stores some parts were being collected to take to the moors for general maintenance on D9009 and 55019. In the workshop some components for Tulyar were having scratch repairs while two returnee volunteers had the lucky job of fin straightening on the radiators. While outside some of members of the simulator team were on board 55008 cab doing some internal maintenance. Pictures of today’s activities are available here.
Peak Rail Diesel Gala
12/13 May was D9016 first official running days at Peak Rail. With many visitors to the railway GH performed very well and entertained crowds on its four runs on both days of the diesel gala. Well done to D9016 volunteers for getting it running so soon and we look forward to seeing it on more runs soon. Pictures from the diesel gala are available here.

Another day and another coat of paint for Tulyar. The first side to be skinned has now had all the panels painted in primer green and the inside has had three coats of paint. On the second side three panels have been welded on and another three are currently in position awaiting welding on. The welds on the inside of these three panels have been painted in primer green to protect them. In the workshop a new jack sleeve cover was being made for D9015. Tulyar's screen wiper motors were having some maintenance done to them and more fin straightening was under way on the spare radiators. Pictures of today’s activities are available here.
Restoration
Another busy day in the depot with many hands on deck to keep things moving. First thing Tulyar's boiler has returned to the depot along with some other items so these had to be fetched off the van and put in the depot. On Tulyar more panel fitting is under way with seven panels fitted in place and on the inside of these were painted in primer green to protect them. At the other end of the D9015 on the first side of skinning more internal panels were being trial fitted and cut so the windows and lights will fit in place correctly. In the workshop more fin straightening was under way on the spare radiators with four volunteers on the job. Outside and the coach has been receiving some tlc and is to have external restoration work to make it look better. Pictures of today’s activities are available here.
55022 Arrives at Barrow Hill
55022 has today arrived at Barrow Hill for its new power unit to be load bank tested, RSG arrived at 11:20 this morning. Below are some pictures by Craig Windle, the first is RSG just after coming off the main line and onto Barrow Hills tracks and the second is 22 at the top of the yard points.

Another busy day at the DPS depot and many hands make light work. More measuring and preparation was underway for the end piece of body skin to be fitted to Tulyar. While on the inside the welds from the plugs of the outer body skin were painted in primer to protect them. A moving scaffolding frame was extended in height and tarpaulin placed over the top, this has been built up to try and trap filling dust when sanded off the body skin spreading around the depot and make the depot a better working environment. Inside the tarpaulin a dust extractor has been created to collect the dust and some filling and sanding was done to test this, but also progress the body work on Tulyar. In the workshop more fin straightening was underway on the top radiator of the stack. Pictures of today’s activities are available here.

DPS Members Day
25 years ago the Deltic Preservation Society bought from BR two Deltic locomotives and brought them to their first home at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. 25 years on this day has been celebrated with bringing D9009 and 55019 back to their first home and having a members day to re-enact the first preservation workings. This day also marked the 30th anniversary of the DPS since it was first formed. To re-enact the 21st August 1982, 55019 (Royal Highland Fusilier) hauled the first train at 10.50 from Grosmont to Pickering and 12.20 return, with D9009 (Alycidon) working the second train at 13.50 from Grosmont to Pickering and 15.20 from Pickering. Prior to 55019 first working D9009 and 55019 were lined up for a photo shoot at Grosmont Station much to the delight of the membership and visitors to the NYMR. The Deltic Preservation Society members were able to travel on these trains free of charge in the front three carriages all day. During the day raffle tickets were sold for various prizes, the top one being a cab ride from Pickering to Grosmont on each of the two trains. There was also a auction for four pictures of Deltics at Doncaster (framed as well) and members were asked to place their hidden bids for this. The DPS sales stand was set-up in the brake coach and had a wide variety of items on sale including a commemorative mug to celebrate the 25th anniversary of actual Deltic Preservation (1982 - 2007). There were also some other new mugs, mouse mats and key rings on sale and the latest DPS/Bachmann Europe plc Limited Edition Model of 47408 was on display. All three things proved to be popular and more funds were raised for the society. Pictures from the member's day are available here.

55022
Trials and tests took place at Barrow Hill over the weekend with injector and fuel leaks on the number 2 engine receiving attention to cure them. The engine was then started and run for around 3 hours. 55022 also soundly ran up and down the Barrow Hill branch line, light engine, both on the number 2 engine alone and and on both engines.
Further adjustments and tests will be carried out over the next week or so to see if the engine can be tempted to behave as it should do. Pictures of day’s activities are available here.
